Some cars impress through performance. Others through rarity. The Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG combines both, while representing an era of automotive engineering that will never return. It features a hand-built 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12, immense performance and uncompromising luxury, developed at a time when AMG was still allowed to build cars without restraint.
This 2008 example was originally delivered through Mercedes-Benz Fletcher Jones Motorcars in Newport Beach, California. It spent most of its life in the United States before being imported into the Netherlands in early 2025. Its extensive American service record, supported by CARFAX and numerous documented visits to official Mercedes-Benz dealers, provides valuable insight into the car’s history.
Finished in Obsidian Black (040U) over Exclusive Black/Anthracite leather, this SL 65 AMG combines an understated exterior with an exceptionally luxurious specification. Notable equipment includes the panoramic glass roof, Designo Alcantara headlining, high-gloss carbon-fibre interior trim, Parktronic and the original 19-inch AMG double-spoke wheels.
The interior presents in exceptionally well-preserved condition, while the bodywork and engine compartment also reflect a car that has been treated with care. Paint-depth measurements show readings of approximately 100 to 150 μm across the majority of the body, with only the right front wing believed to have been refinished or replaced. Two minor cosmetic imperfections remain. Both have deliberately been documented to provide an honest and transparent impression of the car.
What makes this SL 65 AMG particularly appealing is that it has been carefully returned to its original factory appearance in recent years. Later cosmetic modifications, including an aftermarket rear spoiler, dark window tint and non-original wheels, were removed in favour of the original AMG specification.
This may sound like a small detail, but originality is becoming increasingly important within the market for modern performance classics. Rather than attempting to modernise the car, its previous custodian chose to restore the understated character with which it left the factory.
Beneath the long bonnet lies AMG’s legendary M275 engine, a hand-built 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 producing 612 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque in standard form. Power is delivered through AMG’s five-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.
The M275 is renowned for its extraordinary smoothness and seemingly endless reserves of torque. Rather than delivering its performance through high revs or theatrical aggression, the SL 65 accelerates with an effortless intensity that remains remarkable even by modern standards.
The scale of its performance is still difficult to ignore. Mercedes-Benz quoted a 0 to 100 km/h time of approximately 4.2 seconds. With the electronic speed limiter removed, the model was theoretically capable of exceeding 320 km/h.
The M275 engine family also formed the technical foundation for the V12 later developed by Mercedes-AMG for the Pagani Huayra. That connection illustrates the engineering potential of the powerplant fitted to the SL 65 AMG.
In 2018, while still residing in the United States, this example received a professional performance upgrade from respected Mercedes-Benz specialist Kleemann. Following the upgrade, output was stated at approximately 683 PS.
Importantly, the upgrade does not fundamentally alter the character of the car. The SL 65 remains a refined and exceptionally capable Grand Tourer, but with even greater reserves of performance than the already formidable factory version.
This SL 65 AMG is accompanied by an unusually extensive American service history, with approximately sixty recorded service events. During a significant part of its time in the United States, the car was maintained by official Mercedes-Benz dealerships.
The documented history covers considerably more than routine servicing. Over the years, work was carried out on several expensive and model-specific systems. This included attention to components of the Active Body Control system, including the tandem pump, front valve block, an ABC strut, pulsation damper and various hydraulic lines.
Additional documented work included attention to the water pump, engine mounts, components of the Vario-Roof, ignition and fuel-system components, and parts associated with the transmission and braking system.
The American dealer records extend to March 2017, when the car was recorded at 81,653 miles, equivalent to approximately 131,400 kilometres. The car currently displays approximately 161,000 kilometres.
Following its arrival in the Netherlands, the automatic transmission was rebuilt. Together with the extensive CARFAX record and earlier Mercedes-Benz dealer maintenance, this provides a valuable degree of transparency for a model on which maintenance quality is considerably more important than mileage alone.
With a reported worldwide production total of 3,055 examples, the R230-generation SL 65 AMG ranks among the rarer series-production AMG models.
Its significance, however, extends beyond production numbers. The SL 65 belongs to a period before downsizing, widespread electrification and increasingly restrictive emissions regulations fundamentally changed the high-performance car. It combines a hand-built V12, rear-wheel drive, hydraulic Active Body Control and a folding metal roof in a way that is unlikely ever to be repeated.
At the touch of a button, the SL changes from a refined coupé into an open V12 roadster. It can cross countries in comfort, yet deploy performance that remains genuinely serious today. That breadth of ability is precisely what made the R230 SL 65 AMG so extraordinary when new. It also makes the model increasingly relevant as a modern classic.
This Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG should not be presented as an untouched museum piece. It is a carefully used and well-documented Grand Tourer with approximately 161,000 kilometres, minor cosmetic imperfections and a history that is presented openly.
Its appeal lies in the combination of its original colour scheme, carefully restored factory appearance, extensive American service record, Kleemann performance upgrade and rebuilt automatic transmission.
For the enthusiast searching for one of the final hand-built V12 roadsters from Mercedes-AMG, this example offers the opportunity to acquire a rare and highly usable modern classic. It is a car to preserve, but above all, one to drive.
