A Familiar Face
I have known Harry since I was a child. Many years ago, he was our family's veterinarian, looking after our pets. But besides his profession, Harry shared another passion with my father, who is a dentist: a love for exceptional automobiles.
Through this shared interest, we would regularly encounter Harry at classic car events and rallies. Around twelve or thirteen years ago, I had the opportunity to ride alongside him in his Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet during a rally. As a young boy, it was an experience that left quite an impression on me, one that has stayed with me ever since.
It is remarkable how a relatively brief moment can remain so vivid in your memory many years later.
A Cup of Coffee and Stories to Share
Recently, I reconnected with Harry. This time, not as the young boy he once knew, but as an entrepreneur.
The reason for getting in touch was the Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG we had recently added to our collection. I was curious whether Harry might have an interest in the car himself or perhaps know someone within his network who would appreciate such an exceptional V12.
Harry kindly invited me to his home for a cup of coffee and a chance to catch up.
What followed was much more than a conversation about cars.
Harry welcomed me with genuine warmth. He showed me several model trains displayed on the walls of his home, and before long, we found ourselves exchanging stories about our shared passion for automobiles, the people you meet through them, and the experiences they bring.
Our conversation also turned to entrepreneurship. Harry spoke openly about the business challenges and setbacks he had faced in the past. In return, I shared some of the difficulties involved in building a young business today, particularly within the exclusive automotive industry.
Harry expressed his appreciation for the way I was developing my business and the professionalism I was striving to bring to everything I do.
His words meant more to me than he probably realised.
Although we have known each other for many years, our personal encounters have been relatively few and far between. That made his encouragement all the more meaningful, coming from someone I had known and respected since childhood.
Reunited with the 220 SE
After our conversation, we made our way to his car collection.
And there it was: the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE Cabriolet in which I had travelled as a young boy more than a decade earlier.
Harry has owned this Mercedes for many years. Seeing the car again was a special moment for me.
Back then, I had simply been fascinated by the experience of riding in such a beautiful classic automobile. Today, I found myself looking at it through different eyes.
Not only as an enthusiast, but also as someone who now works with exceptional automobiles every day.
It reminded me of why I became so passionate about this world in the first place.
Ultimately, it is not just about the automobiles themselves. It is about the stories, memories and people connected to them.
Two Generations, One Shared Passion
And that brings us back to the reason for my visit: our Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG.
Although the elegant 220 SE Cabriolet and the formidable SL 65 AMG could hardly be more different in character, they both represent remarkable chapters in the history of Mercedes-Benz.
One embodies timeless elegance and the pleasure of open-top motoring. The other combines the refinement of a luxurious grand tourer with the extraordinary power of a 6.0-litre V12 Biturbo.
Two entirely different generations, yet both capable of leaving a lasting impression in their own way.
What began with a drive in Harry's 220 SE as a young boy brought me back to his home years later, this time with an SL 65 AMG as the reason for reconnecting.
And perhaps that is the most beautiful aspect of the automotive world: exceptional automobiles bring people together, sometimes even across generations.
